TRAINING
Racing driver training with Pro Performance is unique.
Our physical training is highly structured and based upon the results gained from our scientific assessments. We follow a strict ‘Periodisation’ plan of training, which means that we construct our sessions depending on the phase of the season we are in, as well as around the areas a driver needs to improve the most. For example, leading up to the first race of the season our sessions will include more sports specific exercises such as reaction training, core stability and neck strength. During the Winter/off-season we might concentrate more on developing stamina and general strength.
Some of the regular components of our training sessions include:

Aerobic Training
To improve VO2 max (stamina) using very specific heart rate thresholds obtained from regular blood lactate tests. Exercises include running, rowing, cycling and circuits, always using a heart rate monitor.

Strength Training
Through extensive research into the muscle groups used when racing, our strength training programmes are specifically tailored to the individual. Our focus is on improving strength endurance, neural pathways (how quickly muscles can react) and flexibility of muscle groups.

Heat and Altitude Acclimatisation
In our new on-site facility we are able to train aerobically and with our steering wheel simulator in our custom-built heat chamber. Controlling temperature and humidity, this type of training can really improve a driver’s tolerance to heat stress. The same exercises can be performed in ‘hypoxic’ or low-oxygen conditions through the use of altitude training equipment. Training like this has been scientifically proven to increase fitness, improve blood circulation around the body and of course prepare a driver for a race in a high altitude environment.

Neck Strength Conditioning
Using our purpose built neck trainer we are able to isolate the specific muscle groups that are put under the stress of braking and high-speed cornering in racing. Drivers often attempt to exercise these muscles through unorthodox, and sometimes harmful methods in the gym. The Pro Performance method of neck training is safe, controlled and extremely effective. We fully understand the varying strength requirements of various formulas up to F1, and can therefore advise neck training accordingly.

Steering Wheel Simulator Training
Our bespoke steering wheel simulator allows the driver to train their forearms, upper-arms and shoulders in the most racing-specific way possible! Seated in the 'racing position' the driver can turn the weight-loaded wheel smoothly on whatever strength setting is desired, and most importantly feel the resistance throught the whole range of movement. We can also use the steering simulator in our heat chamber for the ultimate driver workout.

Reaction Training
We have developed various methods of training a driver's reactions, including using our Batak Reaction Wall. We test and train reactions together with various forms of mental and physical stress such as physical exhaustion, heat and while performing psychological tasks.
