Pro Performance is the answer

Pro Performance is a sports science consultancy delivering world-class support services to racing drivers to improve their training and competition performance.

We are serious about driver development and achieving excellence in the motorsport industry. Pro Performance offer a comprehensive range of services including functional strength and conditioning, reaction training, nutrition, mental skills coaching, unique focusing techniques and competition support.

About Us

Pro Performance was established in 2002 by Martin Poole and Dan Williams. We began by working with athletes in a wide-range of top level sports including Premiership football clubs, dancers from the Royal Ballet School, Team GB rowers and Formula One drivers. Working with karting and car drivers from day-one, we quickly identified that the motorsport industry was investing time, effort and money into improving the performance of the car, but not enough attention was being given to the driver. Addressing this became the focus of our work at Pro Performance.

We continue to develop long-term working relationships with dedicated, hard-working drivers who want to achieve their very best. Pro Performance benefits from full medical support with local partner company Motor Racing Medics (an MSA affiliated medical outfit). Now operating from a new state-of-the-art Human Performance Centre in easy reach of Gatwick airport. Through our on-going sports science research and involvement in motorsport we aim to make Pro Performance the gold standard human performance company in motorsport. If this philosophy fits in with what you might be trying to achieve, then Martin, Dan and the whole Pro Performance team look forward to working with you.

Facilities

Racing Driver-Specific Gym

When designing the gym space, our aim was to offer our client’s a vast range of functional, sports-specific work stations, and to achieve this we needed to give our expert consultants the functional tools to use their imaginations and come up with unique and highly-effective work-outs.

Therefore, the centre-point of the Pro Performance gym is a multi-functional training rig. The training rig gives us an unlimited number of exercise combinations from TRX exercises, rope-pulls, power-bag, boxing, medicine ball and own body-weight exercises.

Our options for cardiovascular exercise come in the shape of British Cycling’s specialised Watt bikes, the most effective static bikes for measuring power output and analysing pedalling technique. The gym also has a concept 2 rowing machine and ski ergometer.

Our range of strength training facilities include a functional neck trainer, bespoke steering wheel trainer, Smith machine and range of barbells, dumbbells, kettle-bells, medicine balls and power-bags.

Recovery and Treatment Area

By installing a custom-designed ‘Recovery Suite’ at Pro Performance HQ, we are taking athletic recovery, injury prevention and soft-tissue treatment to another level in the motorsport world.

Our recovery area is geared towards helping our athlete’s physically repair after a race weekend or intensive bout of physical training. The equipment and treatments we offer in the recovery area aid lactate removal and muscle development and well as promoting flexibility and relaxation.

Training Simulator

Whereas Formula One team simulators are designed to aid the set-up and development of the F1 car, our simulator is geared wholly towards the driver training experience.

When using the Pro Performance training simulator, the driver will physically ‘feel’ like they are driving a racing car. For example, the Formula 3 car configuration will offer the same level of braking and lateral G-force to the driver as they would experience doing the real thing. The same applies to braking forces, and force-feedback when steering, and these levels will change accordingly in the Formula Renault, WSR, GP3 and GP2 modes. The Pro Performance Simulator will be the ultimate training tool for every major single-seater formula.

Assessment Room

Our assessment room is a controlled environment where we are able to conduct physiological assessments, injury and posture evaluations and one-to-one consultations. The assessment room features state of-the-art sports science testing equipment, and a heat acclimatisation chamber.

"It's great working with the guys at Pro Performance at all of my races and having their help with planning my training."

− Heikki Kovalainen, Caterham F1 Driver

"The team at Pro Performance are more than just my trainers. They are more like friends who help you out with every aspect of what the modern day driver requires to achieve their best."

− Max Chilton, Marussia F1 Reserve Driver

"Pro Performance have provided a great service to our Formula 3, World Series by Renault and GP2 teams. They have built a relaxed and productive relationship with our drivers, who I am sure would consider them an invaluable part of the support network at Carlin."

− Trevor Carlin, Carlin Racing Director

"Having Pro Performance at my races and looking after my training is a huge benefit to my fitness development and recovery throughout the season."

− Mike Conway, IRL Driver

"I started with Pro Performance in Summer 2009, and have been training with them throughout the winter. As a result, my fitness has improved greatly on and off the track. They have helped with all aspects of my preparations, including the mental and nutritional aspects, and I therefore feel ready for 2010 and the years to come."

− Jordan King, European Karting driver

"I heard about Pro Performance in 2002 and shortly after meeting the guys, they set about improving the physical and nutritional preparations of my drivers. Since then I have always recommended Pro Performance to all of the drivers I run, and the guys come to a lot of our European races to ensure my drivers are professional and fully prepared for every heat and race. For example the guys were present at the 2008 Winter Cup at Lake Garda where RFM driver Rob Foster-Jones won the KF2 class. I look forward to continuing a professional relationship with Pro Performance in the future."

− Ricky Flynn, European Karting Team Owner
